Based on strong customer demand, TXU Energy said it is targetinginstallation of 100,000 smart energy efficiency devices in homes andbusinesses throughout Texas by 2012.
In a release, the company said it established the new target asit announced a new multi-year purchase, installation and serviceagreement with Comverge, Inc.
The exclusive agreement with Comverge enables TXU Energy toexpand the availability of the TXU Energy iThermostat and othersmart energy devices to customers across the competitive retailelectric market in Texas.
"With this agreement in place, we are now able to installsignificantly more smart energy efficiency devices throughout thestate," said Jim Burke, chief executive officer, TXU Energy. "It'san aggressive target, but we believe that giving our customers thetools they need to use less energy is good for them, it's good forthe environment and it's good for our business."
In 2007, TXU Energy committed to invest $100 million in demand-side management and energy efficiency products and services thathelp Texans better manage and reduce their energy consumption.
To date, TXU Energy has installed roughly 20,000 smart energyefficiency devices like the TXU Energy iThermostat and TXU EnergyPowerMonitor. In addition, the company has introduced new productssuch as time-of-use plans that take advantage of the newly-deployedsmart meters.
"It's clear from our early efforts that consumers are activelychoosing to adopt these new energy efficiency tools," Burke said."We believe that's due, in large part, to our ability to make themboth functional and affordable."
The TXU Energy iThermostat gives consumers the ability tomonitor, remotely control and personally manage their home orbusiness temperature over the Internet.
"Today's news demonstrates TXU Energy's commitment to providingcustomers with the insight and control they need to manage andreduce energy consumption," said Comverge President and CEO, R.Blake Young. "Through this partnership, we are going to help driveenergy efficiency solutions that take full advantage of a smartergrid."
Comverge manufactures the communications module inside the TXUEnergy iThermostat and provides software needed to control thethermostats remotely. The new contract expands that relationship byadding installation and services which will result in operationalefficiencies, provide additional cost savings and enhance thecustomer experience.
