Vic: Government defers land tax decision till after Easter
Victorian Treasurer JOHN BRUMBY has once again refused to specify the government's
position on land tax, despite increasing pressure from the Opposition end speculation
on the matter.
The political battle over land tax continues with JOHN HARVEY defending recommendations
for a broadening of the land tax made by the committee he chaired.
The Harvey review has recommended the current progressive land tax be replaced with
a flat tax of 2.89 per cent of unimproved capital value.
It's also recommended that the threshold of $85,000 be removed.
Mr HARVEY says there's no respectable argument for exempting some land and not other
land from the tax, or differentiating the rate of tax that should be paid.
Mr BRUMBY maintains that the Bracks government's business tax reforms to be announced
in the May 15 budget, won't adversely affect small business or self-funded retirees.
But the Opposition says a broadened land tax will decimate small business and hurt
self-funded retirees with investments in property.
